Newcastle upon Tyne
A metropolitan city in North East England steeped in history and culture all stemming back to a castle built by the Romans about 2,000 years ago, rebuilt by the Anglo-Saxons who renamed the town Monkchester, and rebuilt again by William The Conqueror's son Robert Curthose in 1080 this time renaming the town New Castle. The bauble's illustration depicts the castle keep, the stone structure that replaced Curthose's wooden motte and bailey in 1087 and rebuilt in 1172 which can still be seen today.
