  • A Brief Description

St. James's Park is Newcastle United Football Club's home stadium located in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Newcastle Rangers were the first football team to call the sacred ground of St. James' Park home. They played their first match on the grounds in 1880 (hence the "since" date on our coasters).

Newcastle Rangers folded in 1884 and Newcastle West End FC took over the ground in 1886.

In 1892, Newcastle West End merged with their rivals Newcastle East End, becoming Newcastle United.

The site on which the stadium stands today was once the site of the city's gallows, where Newcastle's convicted criminals and witches alike were executed, and is where the Gallowgate End of the stadium gets its name from. The last recorded hanging at this location was of a man convicted of murdering his wife in 1844.
